Proudly preserved in the city nearby, the star-shaped fort of Matara is one of the most fascinating Dutch legacies beyond our home. Interestingly however, the colonial forces were not the only one to hold the honour of a globally renowned landmark in the region, with the historic Weherahena Viharaya featuring what is known to be the world’s first tunnel shrine adorned with paintings of Buddhist folk tales. Yet another internationally reputed landmark sits just west of Matara at the fishing village of Dickwella – where the Hummanaya Blowhole is the second largest on Earth.

The southernmost point of Sri Lanka also sits at the nearby Dondra Head Lighthouse, upon the famed waters of our southern coastline. Matara is located at the end of the Southern Expressway and Southern Railway Line, approximately two and a half hours away from Colombo. The coastal drive however, lasts closer to four hours, but is an exceptionally scenic journey through provincial hotspots such as Ahungalla, Bentota, and Galle.
