Colonial Cottage Overview

The colonial Cottage is a Boutique Villa located in Nuwara Eliya, fondly known as ‘Little England’ for its charming homes that once served as the summer retreat during the colonial era.
Take a step back in time, and feel like you haven’t moved anywhere at all. Such is the magic of the City of Lights; fondly remembered as a colonial summer retreat and a cool escape from the tropical heat that shines over the rest of Sri Lanka.
At this boutique villa, accommodation stands as a testament to the colonial elegance of yesteryear, while adding a touch of modern hospitality for your comfort. Glance over an intimate bungalow lawn that rests so fittingly in the cool climes of Sri Lanka, from the combination of two beautifully restored Suites and an exquisite Deluxe Room – both of which are fitted with an enchanting blend of period antiques and contemporary essentials for your indulgence in old world luxury.

The solitary Deluxe Room of this colonial Cottage is an intimate space fitted with two single beds. Dressed in pristine white linen that is second only to the elegant walls that surround you, the plush bedding is an open invitation to relax in this highland home. The restored space also features an attached bathroom with hot and cold water to ensure you are always refreshed, along with an individual heating unit that sits as a welcome necessity in these cool climes – the heart of which proudly rests beyond the bungalow gardens just outside the Deluxe Room.

On the other hand, there are two Suites with ample space to immerse yourself in the luxuries of Sri Lanka's hill country. In addition to the comforting king-sized bed, vintage furnishings tastefully complement the rustic charm of each Suite at this boutique villa. A spot of tropical colors also adorn the interior décor as a vibrant reminder of the islands heritage – the history of which has been so carefully preserved across the bungalow. As an added pleasure of Sri Lankan hospitality, the Suites also feature a separate sitting area for you to unwind in with an engaging book or a steaming cup of Ceylon Tea, straight from the lush estates you can spot outside your window.

Although catered for a cottage-style bed and breakfast experience, the artful Dining Room and kitchen facilities have been designed to serve you homely meals, reminiscent of a charming restaurant. In Nuwara Eliya, dining amidst our cool island mountains is a natural invitation for warmth – a specialty that our hospitality is delighted to treat you with.

The contemporary Dining Room features a stately wooden table for eight, and is the ideal space to enjoy an upcountry meal with friends and family. Our resident chef will be delighted to serve you with a range of culinary specialties from Sri Lanka or the rest of world – including our traditional milk rice, accompanied by authentic curries, or even a more continental alternative such as hot pancakes to indulge in amidst the wispy climes of our central highlands. As a specialty of our mountains, fresh fruit is also provided from regional farms that provide us with some of the greatest produce in Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Eliya features a number of attractions in close proximity. On its edge sits Lake Gregory, a magnificent mountain sea with several activities on both land and water – be it riding a pony around its perimeter, or jet skiing in the cool climes of Sri Lanka’s central highlands. As a more leisurely alternative, the lush Victoria Park also features long promenades to enjoy a brisk stroll in the heart of town, and is especially pleasant in the misty mornings.

With the joint managed St. Andrew’s Golf Hotel located nearby, you are also welcome to join the resident naturalist on a unique frog watching tour within the sustainable model wetland on the premises. Several exotic amphibians can be spotted on a night walk with a naturalist, who will not only provide you with an unparalleled knowledge of their habitat and behaviours, but also teach you to listen for their distinct calls on your scouting session.

Beyond the city limits of Nuwara Eliya sits one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic reservesHorton Plains National Park. As the only park which allows you to explore certain portions on foot, you will have the opportunity to get up close to natural wonders including waterfalls, tropical mountain flora, and even wildlife species including the friendly sambur. Finally, a trip to the central highlands is incomplete without exploring the craft behind the tea plantations that paint its hills green. From the colonial Cottage, excursions can be arranged to the Glenloch Tea Factory where you can indulge in firsthand insights into the sourcing, production, and manufacturing of the world-famous Ceylon Tea.
