All materials for the five ECO cabanas were found within the five hectare/eleven acre property which houses the project. Three of them are made from mud, one from wood and one from brick (the clay was found here, formed and baked on site by the local villagers). All of the roofs are thatched coconut leaves, with necessary protection. The husband and wife team behind the Polwaththa project are Nihal (Sri Lankan) and Nel (Dutch). Nihal has over nine years experience as a tour leader in Sri Lanka, for Western tourists and has given over 3,000 people a more informative and memorable time in Sri Lanka. There are tea and coffee-making facilities in each cabana, along with hot water (collected fallen branches are used as fire-wood to heat the water) & cold water, and an open shower. Because of the cool temperature there is no need for AC or fans in the room. Clean towels, sheets and blankets are provided.
Polwaththa Eco-Lodges are only 18km away from Kandy, Sri Lanka's historic hill capital and 125km from the main airport. The national parks which are famous for wild elephants, leopards, crocodiles and a host of other animals and birds are within 100km of Polwaththa. And some of the best beaches in the world are less than 180km away.
